Winterly Treetops – Using Blends to Color the Birds

The Winterly Treetops stamp set has some bird images as well as a pretty greenery swag for you to color or you can use the dies to simply crop bird images from the DSP to use as your focal point. I showed a few of these cards on a Facebook Live video, and for this blog post, I will concentrate on the cards where I colored the birds and greenery swag. You can view the video showing these cards here.

For this card, I colored the birds to make them look like a little bird called the Tufted Titmouse. They are cute little birds, and they actually visit our yard in the spring and fall during their migration times.

Here are the cardstock requirements for this card:
  • Card Base: Pool Party – 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″, score at 4 1/4″
  • First Layer: Nests of Winter DSP – 4 7/8″ x 3 3/8″
  • Cropped Layer: Shaded Spruce – 5″ x 3 1/2″, crop with the large background die and adhere to the top of the DSP layer
  • Birds: Basic White – 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″
  • Greeting: Scrap of Basic White
  • Inside: Basic White – 5 1/4″ x 4″
  • Inside Strip: Nests of Winter DSP (same as the DSP for the front) – 4″ x 1″

I used these colors of Stampin’ Blends to color the birds – Lt & Dk Balmy Blue, Lt Wild Wheat,  Lt Gray Granite, and Lt Basic Back for the beaks. I used Real Red for the Berries and Lt & Dk Pecan Pie for the branch. After coloring and cropping with the coordinating die, I adhered it to the card front with dimensionals.

The greeting is from a favorite retired set called Good Greetings, stamped with Memento and fussy cut, then adhered to the card front with dimensionals.

Add a few of the Cherry Cobbler adhesive berries for a little bling and extra interest.

Here is another Christmas card I designed with this set using the same bird image as the last card, but colored the birds to resemble the beautiful red cardinals. There are so many of these birds in our yard year round and they look so pretty in the green bushes or snow!

Cardstock requirements for this card are as follows:
  • Card Base: Shaded Spruce – 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″, score at 4 1/4″
  • First Layer: Nests of Winter DSP – 5 1/4″ x 4″
  • Second Layer: Basic White – 5″ x 3 1/2″, cropped with the Garden Meadows die and embossed with the Exposed Brick 3D embossing folder. This is adhered to the card with dimensionals.
  • Birds: Basic White – 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″
  • Swag: Basic White – 4″ x 2 1/2″
  • Greeting: Scrap of Basic White
  • Inside: Basic White – 5 1/4″ x 4″

I demonstrated how to color/shade the birds on my Facebook video, and you can watch that here. For the birds I used Stampin’ Blends in these colors – Lt & Dk Cherry Cobbler, Lt Wild Wheat, Lt Smoky Slate, Lt Basic Black. As an alternative, you could use Real Red instead of Cherry Cobbler and Gray Granite instead of Smoky Slate. The brach is colored with Lt & Dk Pecan Pie and the berries with Real Red. Crop and adhere to the card with dimensionals.

I colored the greenery swag with Lt & Dk Granny Apple Green, Dk Shaded Spruce and Real Red for the berries. Crop and glue to the top of the arched white piece.

I used a greeting from the retired Good Greetings stamp set, stamped with Memento and fussy cut, then adhered with dimensionals.

If desired, apply a little wink of Stella to the berries for added glimmer.

For the inside of these cards, stamp your favorite sentiment. Add a coordinating strip of DSP to the top or side if desired, or stamp a small design in one of the corners.

Winterly Treetops – Using the Die Cut Birds

I’m sure you know by now that a couple of pieces of the Nests of Winter Designer Series paper have bird images that can be easily cropped using the dies in the Winterly Treetops bundle. This makes it SO easy to create quick and beautiful cards!

I demonstrated how quickly you can put together a card using only die cuts. You can watch that video here.

  • For the card, I embossed a 5 3/8″ x 4 1/8″ piece of Basic White cardstock with the Birchwood 3D embossing folder, then adhered it to a 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ card base of Old Olive.
  • Using the dies from the Golden Greenery bundle, I cropped a branch from Mossy Meadow cardstock and one from Silver Foil. The Real Red sprig was cropped from one of the Textured Floral dies. I arranged and glued these to the card front.
  • Using the 7th largest Deckled Circle die, I cropped a circle from a scrap of Season of Elegance DSP, then glued that over the stems of the branches on the card front.
  • Crop one of the bird images from the Nests  of Winter DSP and adhere it with dimensionals on top of the green circle.
  • For the inside, stamp your sentiment oto a 5 3/8″ x 4 1/8″ piece of Basic White cardstock and adhere it to the inside of the card.

For this card, I stamped and colored the greenery swags and also used a bird cropped from the Nests of Winter DSP. I demonstrated how I colored the swag on this video using Stampin’ Blends in Lt & Dk Granny Apple Green, DK Shaded Spruce, and Real Red.

I also stamped a few of the pussy willow sprigs, colored the stems with Dk Crumb Cake, and touched the buds with Wink of Stella.

The small pine branches were cropped from Shaded Spruce cardstock.

A 5 1/4″ x 4″ piece of Nests of Winter DSP was adhered to a 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ card base of Shaded Spruce.

Arrange all of the pieces onto the card front and glue in place. I used dimensionals for the lower swag then tucked the bottom part of the bird under that to give it a more realistic look.

If desired, add a little Wink of Stella to the berries for some added shimmer.

For the inside, stamp your sentiment onto a 5 1/4″ x 4″ piece of Basic White cardstock and adhere to the inside.

FB Live Recap: Winterly Treetops Fun-Fold

The Winterly Treetops bundle and coordinating Designer Series Paper is a wonderful set to create Christmas cards or any other wintery cards for birthdays (or just to say hello or thank-you!). There are several options for your creative pleasure with this set. You can choose to stamp the images and color them, use the dies to crop images from the DSP, or just use the beautiful DSP along with a greeting or sentiment of your choice for quick and easy designing.

On my video this week, I showed a few of these options to make Christmas cards. If you missed the live presentation, you can watch the replay here.

In this post, I will explain how to make the fun-fold card that I demonstrated. It’s a very easy fold to make and can be modified by using different Designer papers or focal points. (I’ll do a separate blog post for the other cards.)

Here is how the fun-fold looks when it is closed:

When you open the fun-fold, it has three separate panels that you can decorate with all of the beautiful Designer Paper that coordinates with the stamp set.

To make this card, you’ll need the following cardstock:
  • Card Base: Garden Green – 5 1/2″ x 4 1/4″
  • Piece for Flaps: Garden Green – 9 3/4″ x 4 1/4″, score at 6 1/2″ and 3 1/4″
  • Designer Paper for Base: Nests of Winter DSP – 5 1/4″ x 4″
  • Cardstock for Inside Sentiment: Basic White – 4″ x 3″
  • DSP for Remaining Panels: Nests of Winter DSP – 4″ x 3″, cut two using different, coordinating papers
  • Strip: Nests of Winter DSP – 5 1/2″ x 1″
  • Birds: Crop from Nests of Winter DSP
  • Greeting: Scrap of Basic White

The greeting and sentiment stamps I used for my card are from a retired set called Still Night. If you don’t have that set, use whatever stamps you have to finish the card.  In place of the silver cord for the bow, you could use ribbon or baker’s twine.

Wintry Changing Leaves

The Changing Leaves bundle is great for fall-themed cards and projects, but have you thought about using it for winter or Christmas cards? One of the things I like to do is challenge myself to find ways to design with stamp sets and bundles for multiple occasions or seasons so that I can get more use out of a set. Navy blue and silver always makes for an elegant wintry card, and using those basic colors with the Changing Leaves bundle did not disappoint.

If you’d like to recreate this card, I have the instructions and supply list below.

  • Start with a base of Night of Navy – 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ scored at 4 1/4″.
  • For the front layers, emboss a 4 7/8″  3 5/8″ piece of Smoky Slate cardstock with the Changing Leaves 3D embossing folder, then adhere to a 5″ x 3 3/4″  piece of Basic White cardstock. Attach this to the card front.
  • Stamp the leaf images with Night of Navy ink onto scraps of Basic White cardstock, then crop with the large die.
  • Crop two lacy leaves clusters, one solid small leaf cluster, and a sprig from Silver Foil paper. Snip one of the leaf clusters apart and use the leaves individually.
  • Arrange the cropped piece onto the card front and glue in place. Refer to photo for placement.
  • Use a glue dot to adhere a small bow made with the Silver Trim ribbon to the leaf stems.
  • Add a few silver Adhesive Metallic Backed Gems to the card front for extra bling.

  • For the inside, stamp a sentiment of your choice using Night of Navy ink onto a 5 1/4″ x 4″ piece of Basic White cardstock. If desired, stamp a leaf or partial leaf onto the lower left corner of this piece. Adhere to the inside of the card.

Golden Changing Leaves

Here’s another idea for using the Changing Leaves bundle to create a card that would be perfect for a winter birthday or Christmas. Here again, I’m using a typical Autumn-type set for a winter design. I hope this design inspires you to look at your stamp sets with fresh eyes to see how you can use them year-round!

If you’d like to recreate this card, the instructions and supply list are listed below.

  • Begin with a card base of Blackberry Bliss of 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″, scored at 4 1/4″.
  • Emboss a 5 1/4″ x 4″ piece of vellum with the Changing Leaves 3D embossing folder and adhere to the card base. NOTE: Glue and/or tape runners will show the vellum. Use a few small glue dots in the corners and in the middle to adhere the vellum.
  • Crop the large leaf using a 5 1/4″ x 3 3/4″piece of Distressed Gold specialty paper.
  • Crop the maple leaf from a 2 1/4″ x 2 1/4″ piece of Season of Elegance DSP.
