Tutorial: Colorful Beautiful World

Sometimes people ask me,”Where do you get your ideas?” What a great question! I’ve asked other people the same thing sometimes.

So where DO I get my ideas? Well, of course the images in a stamp set are a good place to start. Many of the stamp sets are what I call ‘nature based’ – flowers, trees, animals, landscape scenes. Look around your own garden or your neighbor’s garden or a park or nature trail to see how you could incorporate a stamp set into something you are seeing in real life.

Look out your window and match your design to the season – is it snowing? Or do you see pretty Summer or Fall colors?

Whimsical designs are great for children’s cards or light, humorous cards to brighten someone’s day. Look in stores and catalogs or even the sales ads that you get in the mail to see what decor is trending use your stamps sets to mimic what you are seeing.

“Oh, but I never know what colors to use” is something else I hear from others. Go realistic! Or pick your favorite color and go monotone. Be wild and crazy and and play with bold colors then try the same design with soft pastels – you’ll be surprised at how different the exact same card looks with different colors!

While the Beautiful World stamp set is generally used for more masculine looking cards, nobody says you can’t use bright colors! As I was walking through some of the home decor stores recently, I ran across a section of globes that were not the traditional colors of blue for water and browns/green for the land masses, but rather had a bright pink color with gold accents – and that’s where I drew my inspiration for this card.

By adding a beautiful Poinsettia and using the traditional red and green colors of Christmas, I’m looking at this set in a whole different light. The little cabin looks so cozy and inviting – it really evokes a Christmas feeling!

Mini Poinsettia Tree Card

The Poinsettia Dies have a small flower die that’s often overlooked in favor of the larger Poinsettia flower dies. I punched out a couple just for fun and immediately thought about Poinsettia Tree decorations that I’ve seen at shopping malls and conference centers. The die set actually has two of the small flower dies so you can punch out a bunch rather quickly.

This card has very little stamping but instead focuses on the dies and Designer Paper. The bright colors and gold ‘bling’ on this card give it a big ‘wow’ factor and it’s great to make for the special people in your life!

Cut Cardstock:
  • Card base: Whisper White – 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″, score at 4 1/4″
  • Second layer: Real Red – 5 3/8″ x 4 1/8″, cut two
  • Second Layer (front): Poinsettia Place Designer Series Paper (green design) – 5 1/4″ x 4″
  • Second Layer (inside): Whisper White – 5 1/4″ x 4″
  • Poinsettias: Scraps of Real Red
  • Sprigs: Scraps of Gold Foil Paper
  • Greeting: Gold Foil Paper – 1 5/8″ x 7/8″;  Whisper White – 1 1/2″ x 3/4″
  • Inside Strips: Real red – 4″ x 5/8″;  Poinsettia Place DSP (green design) – 4″ x 1/2″
  • Envelope: Poinsettia Petals DSP (green design) 5 7/8″ x 2 3/8″

Note: All flowers and sprigs are made with dies from the Poinsettias Dies

Assembly:

Layer one 51/4″ x 4″ piece of DSP onto one of the 5 3/8″ x 4 1/8″ pieces of Real Red cardstock, then adhere to the card front.

Using the small flower dies from the Poinsettia dies set, crop 20 flowers from scraps of Real Red cardstock. (This doesn’t take that long – I promise!) Use a glue dot to attach one flower on top of a second flower, turning it so that the petals on the top flower are in between the petals on the bottom flower. Repeat for all the flowers so that you have ten tiny Poinsettias.

Use Dimensionals to attach the poinsettias to the card front in a triangle shape, refer to photo for placement. Place a medium Gilded Gem on each flower center.

Use Real Red ink to stamp the greeting from the Poinsettia Petals stamp set onto the small rectangle of Whisper White cardstock. Adhere to the small Gold Foil rectangle with Dimensionals, then use Dimensionals to attach to the card front under the tree – refer to photo for placement.

Crop three sprigs from the Gold Foil Paper scraps using the sprig die. Cut apart the sprigs as desired and place the pieces around the flowers and a few in between the center flowers – refer to photo for placement.

Inside:

Use Real Red ink to stamp a sentiment of your choice to the remaining piece of Whisper White cardstock. For my card, I chose a sentiment from the Peaceful Boughs stamp set.

Adhere the DSP and Real Red strips together, then attach to the top of the stamped piece, leaving a small white border at the top. Adhere to the remaining piece of Real Red cardstock, then adhere to the inside of the card.

Envelope:

Use Seal or Multipurpose glue to adhere the remaining piece of DSP to the outside flap of the envelope. fussy cut the excess paper off.

FB Live Recap: Black Ice Technique Snowfront Cards

The Black Ice Technique may take a little practice, but after a couple “test runs” you will be hooked on this technique! It works best with images that are heavy outlines or fuller designs since there is no coloring involved. It’s generally done with silver foil paper, but could you could also use bronze or gold foil if you’re going to create an autumn card or perhaps a more “masculine” birthday card.

For my Facebook Live demonstration this week, I chose to make winter scenes for Christmas cards using the Snowfront stamp set.

You can access the video here if you missed it live.

Join me every Tuesday at 2 p.m. EST on my Facebook Group page, Friends Who Like Time4Stamping, where I demonstrate a project or two!

The cardstock used for this card is cut to the following dimensions:

Tutorial: Halloween Wizard

This little gnome is easily transformed into a Halloween Wizard by snipping off the jingle bell on his hat and adding some starry designer paper to it instead! He fits in perfectly with the Halloween scene. This card is a little labor intensive, but don’t let that scare you – the results are well worth it!

Cut Cardstock:
  • Card Base: Basic Black – 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″
  • First layer: Pumpkin Pie – 5 3/8″ x 4 1/8″, cut two
  • Second Layer: Very Vanilla – 5 1/4″ x 4″, cut two
  • Wizard: Scrap of Very Vanilla
  • Wizards Hat: Scrap of Brightly Gleaming Designer Paper- Starry pattern
  • Tombstones: Scraps of Gray Granite
  • Pumpkins: Scraps of Pumpkin Pie and Daffodil Delight
  • Bats: Scraps of Black Glitter Paper

Assembly:

Begin by creating the background on which you will build the Halloween scene. Start by punching a 1 1/2″ circle out of a scrap of cardstock to use as a stencil. Save the circle that you punched out.

Place this stencil over one piece of the Very Vanilla cardstock and sponge the circle with Daffodil Delight ink. If you haven’t sponged before, practice on a scrap piece of cardstock. Always bring in your sponge from the side so that you don’t have a big ‘glob’ of ink in the middle of your sponged area. Start with a light touch – you can always add more color as desired.

Now fill in the rest of the background. Begin by holding the circle that you punched out for the moon stencil over the moon. Lightly start sponging around the moon and sky with Misty Moonlight with a clean sponge. Don’t be afraid to make some areas darker than others – the difference in color will give the sky a more realistic look. Using a clean sponge, apply a little Blackberry Bliss ink over some areas of the sky, lightly blending it onto the blue sky. When you are satisfied with the way the sky looks, use a clean sponge to apply Early Espresso ink at the bottom of the piece for the ground.

Using Memento ink, stamp the tree image from the Life Is Beautiful stamp set onto the sponged background piece, going off the left side just a bit. Make sure part of the branch is over the moon to give it a “spooky” look. Also, the tree trunk should be very close to the bottom of the piece. Refer to card photo.

You are ready to make all the embellishments now!

To make the tombstones, cut a scrap of Gray Granite cardstock 1″ wide and another scrap at 3/4″ wide. Trim these pieces with the Lovely Labels punch to look like the top of a tombstone. I used both sides of the punch so that I have different looking tombstones, punching two from the 1″ wide cardstock and one from the 3/4″ cardstock. Trim these so that they are a little over an inch tall, use your discretion.

Use a clean sponge to apply some Gray Granite ink onto the tombstones to give them a weathered look. Use Memento ink to stamp a small spider from the Hallows Night Magic stamp set onto one tombstone. Use a black marker to write “RIP” on another tombstone.

Use the tiny pumpkin dies from the Trio of Tags dies set to crop two pumpkins from Pumpkin Pie cardstock. Fussy cut two tiny circles from Daffodil Delight cardstock to glue to the back of the pumpkins.

Use Memento ink to stamp the Gnome from the Gnome for the Holidays stamp set onto a scrap of Whisper White cardstock. Fussy cut the gnome and snip off the jingle bell on his hat. Color the arms with the Dark Pumpkin Pie Stampin’ Blends marker and his boots with the Light Misty Moonlight Blends marker.

Cut a small curve on one side of a small piece of starry paper from the Brightly Gleaming DSP pack so that if fits over the bottom of the gnome’s hat. You may have to do this by trial and error – it took me a couple times to match the edges! Once you have the bottom matching the hat, glue it onto the gnome hat and then fussy cut the excess off so that the hat is now a wizard’s hat! As an alternate way of making the hat, you could ink the hat on the gnome stamp and stamp it onto a piece of the starry Brightly Gleaming DSP, then fussy cut it out and glue to the gnome. You may want to cut the hat a little bigger before glueing it to the gnome, then trim off the excess.

Crop three small bats out of Black Glitter Paper from the Hallows Magic die set.

Let’s put it all together!

Adhere the sponged background piece onto one of the pieces of Pumpkin Pie cardstock, then adhere to the card base. Use Seal or multipurpose glue to attach two of the tombstones, and dimensionals to attach one of them near the tree. Use dimensionals to attach the Wizard to the cardfront in front of the tombstones. Use glue to attach the two tiny pumpkins, one by the tree trunk and one by the tombstone on the right side. Use glue to attach the bats. Refer to card photo for placement of all these embellishments.

Inside:

Use Memento ink to stamp the greetings from the Hallows Night Magic stamp set onto the remaining piece of Very Vanilla cardstock. Stamp two small bats next to the greeting. Adhere the completed piece to the remaining piece of Pumpkin pie cardstock, then attach to the inside of the card.

Envelope:

Use Memento ink to stamp two small spiders or small bats onto the lower left corner of the envelope.

Tutorial: Harvest Blessings

I just love the Autumn look of this card! Fall is my favorite season, and living in Michigan, that means all the typical delights of the season – pumpkins, apple cider, beautiful fall flowers, cooler temperatures, changing colors of the leaves, and the anticipation of the holidays approaching. For this card, I combined the gorgeous sunflowers with a pumpkin which really pop against the two different designer papers.

  • First layer: Bumblebee – 5 3/8″ x 4 1/8″, cut two

Adhere the Bumblebee flower pattern DSP below the cinnamon cider DSP.

Adhere a piece of Cinnamon Cider ribbon around this piece at the seam. I found the easiest way to do this was just to tape it to the back side, but you could use multipurpose glue or seal.

Use Memento ink to stamp the sunflower image from the Jar Of Flowers stamp set onto a piece of Very Vanilla cardstock. Color with Stampin’ Blends markers using the following colors – Mango Melody, Cinnamon Cider, Shaded Spruce, Pumpkin Pie and Cherry Cobbler. Fussy cut the sunflower image.

Use Pumpkin Pie ink to stamp the pumpkin from the Harvest Hello stamp set onto a scrap of Pumpkin Pie cardstock, then use the Apple Builder Punch to punch it out.

Use Old Olive ink to stamp three pumpkin leaves from the Harvest Hello stamp set onto a scrap of Old Olive cardstock Fussy cut the leaves. Crop a vine tendril out of a scrap of Old Olive cardstock using the die from the World Map die set.

Use dimensionals to attach the pumpkin and flowers to the card front – see photo for placement. Adhere the leaves and tendril to the pumpkin using multipurpose glue. Place a few gilded gems onto the card front – see photo for placement.

Attach the DSP strip to the Bumblebee strip, then adhere to the piece of Very Vanilla cardstock. Use Memento ink to stamp the sentiment from the Country Home stamp set below the decorative strip. Adhere the completed piece to the inside of the card.
