Tutorial: Poppy Weaved Paper

Use those scraps of the gorgeous Designer Paper to create a unique background for a single poppy!

Cut Cardstock:

Assembly:

Emboss one 5 1/4″ x 4″ piece of Whisper White cardstock with the Subtles embossing folder and snail to the card base.

Use your paper snips to flag each end of all of the Designer Series Paper strips. To attach the strips in a weave pattern, I found it easier to apply snail to about 1/2″ of one end of each of the four longer strips and adhere to the center of the card front about 1/8″ apart. I started on the right side. The rest of the paper strips are loose so that you can ‘weave’ the shorter strips into the longer strips.

To begin weaving the short strips, apply snail to the back of a strip and slide it up and over every other long strip, pushing it toward the right side.

Take the second short strip and do the same thing, only this time you will be going up and over the opposite long strips to start forming the weave pattern.

Continue attaching the remaining short strips in this manner until all five strips are in place.  You will most likely have to add a little snail to the ends of the horizontal strips once you have finished weaving the vertical strips. You should now have a pretty weaved background for the focal point.

Crop one large poppy from the PoppyMoments dies using Poppy Parade cardstock. Crop the large poppy outline from the same die set using Basic Black cardstock. Use multipurpose glue to glue these two pieces together.

Crop the flower center from Daffodil Delight cardstock and glue to the center of the poppy, leaving the tiny spikes loose and curl up slightly by just pushing them up.

Attach a large Gold Faceted Gem to the center of the poppy. Attach the poppy to the card front with dimensionals. See photo for placement.

Crop two of the narrow leaf stems from the Poppy Moments dies out of Old Olive cardstock. Trim the bottom two leaves off of each of these pieces. Using glue or snail, slide the leaves under the poppy attaching them to the card front. See photo for placement.

I chose to put a “Happy Birthday” greeting on the front of my card using the greeting from the Timeless Tulips stamp set. I used Memento ink to stamp it onto the 1/2″ strip of Whisper White cardstock, flagged one end, and trimmed it to fit the card front. I used snail to attach it over one of the Designer Paper strips. You could also not put a greeting on the front and just let the entire weaved background show.

Inside:

Use snail to attach the remaining strip of Designer Paper near the top of the remaining piece of Whisper White cardstock. Use Memento ink to stamp the sentiment from the Peaceful Moments stamp set under the decorative strip. Use Memento ink to stamp the poppy image from the Painted Poppies stamp set to the lower left corner of the Whisper White cardstock. Color with Light and Dark Poppy Parade Stampin’ Blends markers. Attach the completed piece to the inside of the card with snail.

Envelope:

I love to carry the card design to the envelope! It just seems to finish off the project nicely and it is a little something extra that lets the person you are sending the card to know they are receiving a “masterpiece” from you!

Use Memento ink to stamp the poppy on the lower left corner of the envelope and color with the Light and Dark Stampin’ Poppy Parade Blends markers.

Tutorial: Bluebird on Cherry Blossoms

I love it when two separate stamp sets that are beautiful all by themselves can be combined to create something really special! The bird from the Free As A Bird stamp set is perfect for sitting on the flower branch from the Forever Blossoms stamp set.

Cut Cardstock:

Assembly:

Use snail to layer the 5 1/4″ x 4″ piece of Designer Series Paper onto the 5 3/8″ x 4 1/*” piece of Whisper White cardstock, then layer this onto the card base.

Use Memento ink to stamp the flower branch from the Forever Blossoms stamp set and the large bird from the Free As A Bird stamp set onto the 5″ x 4 1/2″ piece of Whisper White cardstock. Use Memento ink to stamp the portion of the branch that has the largest flower.

Using Stampin’ Blends markers, color the bird with Light Balmy Blue and Light Pumpkin Pie. Fussy cut the bird with your paper snips. Color the flowers with the Light and Dark Petal Pink and the leaves with the Light and Dark Old Olive Stampin’ Blends markers. Use the corresponding die from the Cherry Blossoms dies to crop the flower branch. Use your paper snips to fussy cut the single flower.

Use dimensionals to attach the flower branch to the card front. You will have to cut some of the dimensionals into smaller pieces to fit the stem portion of the flower branch. Use dimensionals to attach the bird to the card front as if he is sitting on the branch. Use dimensionals to attach the single flower on top of the same flower on the branch. Place a large pearl in the center of this flower. See photo for placement of branch and bird.

Use Memento ink to stamp the ‘Love’ from the Forever Blossoms stamp set onto a scrap of Whisper White cardstock. Crop with the smallest die from the Stitched So Sweetly dies. Use the next largest size die from the Stitched So Sweetly dies to crop a shape from a scrap of Petal Pink cardstock. Layer these pieces with dimensionals, then attach to card front with dimensionals. See photo for placement.

Inside:

Snail the Designer Paper strip to the strip of Petal Pink cardstock, then snail this near the top of the remaining piece of Whisper White cardstock.

Use Memento ink to stamp the sentiment from the Peaceful Moments stamp set onto the Whisper White cardstock. Stamp the small flower from the Forever Blossoms stamp set onto the lower left corner of the Whisper White cardstock using Memento ink. Color the flower with the Light and Dark Petal Pink Stampin’Blends markers.

Snail the completed piece to the inside of the card.

Envelope:

Use Memento ink to the stamp the same flower that you used for the inside of the card onto the lower left corner of the envelope. Color with the Light Petal Pink Stampin’ Blends marker.

Don’t Be Disappointed!

It’s almost that time of year again. The new Annual Stampin’Up! catalog will be coming out in June! That means that we will be saying goodbye to the 2018-2020 In-Colors: Lovely Lipstick, Grapefruit Grove, Pineapple Punch, Call Me Clover and Blueberry Bushel – Cardstock, Stamp pads, Ink Refills, Markers, Ribbon – they will all be gone!

What does that mean for you?  NOW is the time to order these products. By the time the end of March rolls around, more people will start thinking about ordering these supplies in their favorite colors, and when that happens, they sell out FAST. Because they are retiring products, Stampin’Up! will not be replenishing their stock of these items, so when they’re gone – they’re gone!

If you already have the Stampin’ Pads, you may want to consider purchasing the Ink Refills. If you already have a stash of cardstock, perhaps you would like to get more In-Color Designer Paper to coordinate with it.

Whatever it is you want from the 2018-2020 In-Color collection, don’t be disappointed – order today!

Here is a list of everything we will be saying goodbye to:

Tutorial: First Signs of Spring

Michigan winters often bring a blanket of snow that may last well through February and even into March. We’ve had snowfall in April some years as well!  One of the harbingers of the coming Spring are the crocuses that are the first flowers to pop up, sometimes even through the snow. The familiar purples, yellows and white colors let us know that Spring is definitely on its way!

Cut Cardstock:

Assembly:

Emboss the 5 1/4″ x 4″ piece of Whisper White cardstock with the Tufted Embossing Folder, then use snail to adhere to the 5 3/8″ x 4 1/8″ piece of Whisper White cardstock.  This small border gives the embossed piece a more finished look. Set aside.

Use snail to adhere the gingham strip to the center of the Highland Heather strip of cardstock. Use the Edge trim die from the Lily Pad dies to crop the piece of Granny Apple Green cardstock.

Snail the green strip to one edge of the strip of Highland Heather cardstock on the opposite side of the gingham strip so that just the scalloped edge of the green is showing from the front. You will have to trim the green strip slightly to match the width of the Highland Heather strip.

Use snail to adhere the completed decorative strip to the Tufted embossed cardstock. Tie a piece of coordinating ribbon around this piece over the gingham design, so that the bow is toward the left of the card. See photo for placement. I like to use the ‘see-through’ organza ribbon for this that I purchase from one of the big-box craft stores, so that the gingham paper shows through the ribbon, but feel free to use which ever ribbon you prefer. Snail the entire piece to the card front.

Use Memento ink to stamp the larger flowers from the Easter Promise stamp set onto the 4′ x 3″ piece of Whisper White cardstock. Crop this piece with the largest oval die from the Stitched Shapes dies.

Color the flowers with the Light and Dark Highland Heather Stampin’ Blends marker. Use the Dark Daffodil Delight Stampin Blends marker for the one flower center and the Dark Granny Apple Green Stampin’ Blends marker for the leaves.

Crop the 4″ x 3″ piece of Highland Heather cardstock with the largest scalloped oval die from the Layering Ovals dies and adhere to the back of the flower piece with dimensionals. Adhere this piece to the card front using dimensionals. See photo for placement.

Use Gorgeous Grape ink to stamp the ‘Happy Spring’ greeting from the Fabled Friends stamp set onto a scrap of Whisper White cardstock. Crop with the smallest scalloped rectangle from the Stitched So Sweetly dies. Adhere to the card front using dimensionals.

Place a medium rhinestone on each corner of the card front to add a little bling. The added sparkle just brings the whole design together!

Inside:

Use Gorgeous Grape ink to stamp the sentiment to the remaining piece of Whisper White cardstock. For this card I used the sentiment from the Good Morning Magnolia stamp set. Attach the gingham strip to the Highland Heather strip using snail, then snail to the inside of the card near the top.

Envelope:

I always like to decorate the outside of the envelope to coordinate with the card design. I thought the small flower bud from the Free As A Bird stamp set was a good match for this card. I used Memento ink to stamp the flower bud, then colored it with the Light Highland Heather and Dark Granny Apple Green Stampin’ Blends markers.

Use Early Espresso ink to stamp the detailed raccoon image over the solid image, making sure to take the time to line it up correctly so that it matches.

Tutorial: Delicate Blossoms

Embossing a piece of vellum with the Parisian Flourish embossing folder makes a lovely backdrop for the cherry blossom branch from the Forever Blossoms stamp set.

Cut Cardstock:

Assembly:

Using Gray Granite ink, stamp the flower branch from the Forever Blossoms stamp set twice onto a scrap of Whisper White cardstockCrop with the corresponding die.

Add a bit of Petal Pink ink to the flowers using a sponge dauber. Use a clean sponge dauber to apply Granny Apple Green ink to the leaves. Using paper snips, carefully cut one of the flower stems into two bunches of flowers and set aside.

Use Gray Granite ink to stamp the greeting from the Positive Thoughts stamp set onto a scrap of Whisper White cardstock. Crop with the second smallest label die from the Stitched So Sweetly dies and set aside.

Emboss the vellum with the Parisian Flourish embossing folder. Because the vellum is translucent, it’s best not to use a lot of glue or snail to adhere it to the card front. For this reason, I find it better to first attach the flower branch, the top half of the cut flower branch and the greeting to the vellum using dimensionals.

When you turn the embossed vellum piece over, you can see where to apply glue to the vellum behind the flowers and greeting so that it won’t show through to the front. Attach this piece to the card front. You may want to add just a drop of glue or a touch of snail at each corner of the vellum so that it doesn’t curl up.

Make a small bow with the ribbon and attach it to the card front with a glue dot. Refer to photo for placement.

Inside:

Use Gray Granite ink to stamp the sentiment from the Positive Thoughts stamp set to the 5 1/4″ x 4″ piece of Whisper White cardstock.

Snail the remaining piece of the flower stem to the inside of the card toward the bottom left side. Use snail to attach the completed piece to the inside of the card.

Envelope:

Use Gray Granite ink to stamp a flower from the Forever Blossoms stamp set to the lower left corner of the envelope. Use a sponge dauber to add a little Petal Pink ink to the flower.

Crop the 4 1/2″ x 3 1/4″ piece of Rococo Rose cardstock with the largest scalloped rectangle from the Stitched So Sweetly dies. Crop the 4″x 3″ piece of Whisper White cardstock with the second larges scalloped rectangle from the Stitched So Sweetly dies. Snail these pieces together, then use Dimensionals to attach it to the card front.

Use Rococo Rose ink to stamp two large and one medium tulip image from the Timeless Tulips stamp set onto a scrap of Whisper White cardstock.

Use the tulip punch to punch out the two large tulips. Fussy cut the medium tulip using your paper snips.

Use Granny Apple Green ink to stamp four curved leaves and three curved stems from the Timeless Tulips stamp set. Use the punch to punch out the leaves. Fussy cut the stems with your paper snips.

Arrange the tulips, stems and leaves on the card front and attach with Dimensionals. Refer to photo for placement.

Tie a double bow with the White Crinkle Ribbon and attach to the stems with a glue dot.

Tips for Quick and Easy “Poppy” Cards (Product Spotlight: “Peaceful Poppies Elements”)

If you’re anything like me, you love to create some very stepped-up cards that are your “masterpieces.” There are times, though, when I just want to make something quickly, yet still be pleased with the results of having a card with lots of details to it.

The ‘Peaceful Poppies Elements‘ in the 2020 mini catalog are the answer! There are lots of elements that are ready-made – you only have to snail, glue, or use dimensionals to attach them to your cards.

Using just a piece of of Whisper White cardstock, colored cardstock and matching ink, you can make a very pretty card in a matter of minutes!  This is great if you want to build up your stash of cards, or make several to give someone as a hostess gift. Turn them into birthday, “thinking of you,” or thank-you cards, or just leave blank as notecards.

Here are a few cards I quickly made and you can see how using the elements give a certain flair to the cards.

For the first card, I used a piece of Poppy Parade cardstock cut at 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ scored at 4 1/4″ as the card base. I embossed a 5 1/4″ x 4″ piece of Whisper White cardstock with the Stone 3D folder from the Power of Hope bundle, although any of your favorite embossing folders would work.

I added several pieces from the Peaceful Poppies Elements. I colored the leaf element with the Light Old Olive Stampin’ Blends Marker, then stamped the “Happy Birthday” greeting from the Peaceful Moments stamp set using Poppy Parade ink and cropped it with a rectangle from the Stitched Rectangle framelits. The flowers and greeting were attached with Dimensionals, everything else was attached with snail.

For the inside of the card, I used Poppy Parade ink to stamp the sentiment from the Peaceful Moments stamp set onto a 5 1/4″ x 4″ piece of Whisper White cardstock and snailed it to the inside.

For the envelope, I used Old Olive ink to stamp one of the leaf outline stamps to the lower left corner of the envelope.

For the next card, I used an 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ piece of Mossy Meadow cardstock scored at 4 1/4″ for the card base. I used Memento ink to stamp several of the larger flowers and leaves from the Painted Poppies stamp set onto a piece of 5 1/2″ x 4″ piece of Whisper White cardstock.

I thought just the black images were a little plain but I didn’t want to take the time to color every flower and leaf. The Painted Poppies stamp set also has a couple of sizes of ‘spatter’ stamps, so I used Poppy Parade ink and Mossy Meadow ink to add a splash of color to the flowers and leaves. I stamped off on a piece of scrap paper before stamped on the cardstock so that the colors would be a little muted.

I used several of the elements to dress up the card, again coloring the leaf with the Light Old Olive Stampin’ Blends marker. I stamped the ‘Thank You’ from the Peaceful Moments stamp set onto a scrap piece of Whisper White cardstock and used the Label Me Fancy punch to punch it out. The black element and leaf are snailed to the card front and the greeting and flowers are attached with Dimensionals.

I left the inside blank to write my own personal message, but I decorated it a bit, using Memento ink to stamp the leaf and using Mossy Meadow ink stamped off to add the splash of color to the leaves.

I stamped the envelope as I did for the first card.

For the last card, I used a 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ piece of Calypso Coral cardstock scored at 4 1/4″ for the card base. I used Poppy Parade ink to stamp the flower from the Painted Poppies stamp set several times onto the front of the card base.  I again used several elements  for the card front. I used Mossy Meadow ink to stamp the ‘Happy Birthday’ greeting from the Peaceful Moments stamp set onto a scrap piece of Old Olive cardstock, then punched it out with the Label Me Fancy punch. I used just a touch of Multipurpose glue to attach the vellum flower and leaves, all other elements are attached using Dimensionals.

For the inside of this card, I used Poppy Parade ink to stamp the flower and Old Olive ink to stamp the leaf onto a 5 1/4″ x 4″ piece of Whisper White cardstock. I used Memento ink to stamp the sentiment from the Peaceful Moments stamp set, then snailed it to the inside of the card.

I stamped the envelope as I did for the first card.

There are many different pieces in the Peaceful Poppies Elements to choose from when adding them to your cards or projects and I hope this gives you a few ideas. Could you or I use these stamp sets to make really fancy cards? Absolutely! But remember–these are just some suggestions to use the Peaceful Poppies Elements to make a card or cards quickly.

Stay tuned for more posts using the Peaceful Poppies Suite to create cards that require a little more time investment!

Time4Stamping Tip: Using Reversible Stamps

Stampin’Up! has recently introduced stamp sets that are reversible, the latest one being ‘Mountain Air’ (which is in the 2020 Mini Catalog). One side of the stamp is solid and the other side is detailed. Have you tried using any reversible stamps yet? They are not hard to use, and the Mountain Air stamp set especially gives a certain level of depth to your design.

I’ve made a couple cards using this set, and you can see how the difference in the stamps gives it a 3D look. Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your Mountain Air stamp set.

First of all, since this is a larger stamp and is photopolymer, it is important to place a foam mat or silicon mat under the cardstock you are stamping. I like to use the Stampin’ Pierce mat. It gives you even pressure and ink coverage when using photopolymer stamps. Also, because it is a larger stamp, hold the stamp on the cardstock just a few seconds longer to give the all ink time to transfer to the cardstock.

Use the solid side of the stamp first in creating your design. To give the mountains the illusion of depth, you should stamp several layers of color starting with the lightest color first. For the card with the purple mountains, I actually stamped the solid stamp of mountains four times. For the first layer, I chose to use Highland Heather ink.

Next, I used Gorgeous Grape ink and stamped off on a piece of scrap paper before stamping the cardstock. Stamp this layer a bit lower than the first layer, overlapping slightly.

For the third layer of color, I used Gorgeous Grape ink, and again, stamped the solid stamp a bit lower onto the cardstock.

For the final layer of the solid stamp, I went with Blueberry Bushel ink, which really provides a nice contrast to the purple colors of the previous layers.

Now, we will clean the stamp and flip it over on the block so that the detailed side will be stamped. For this layer, I chose to use Night of Navy ink which balances out the blue and purples of the previous layers. I stamped the mountains on a scrap piece of cardstock.

I used the coordinating dies to crop the mountains.

I attached the cropped mountains with dimensionals to give it even more depth.  (You will have to trim this piece to match the size of the cardstock you are using.)

The rest of the card was finished using other stamps from the Mountain Air stamp set.

Note that you don’t have to use exactly four layers of the solid mountain stamp to create the illusion of depth! For the next card, I used Sahara Sand ink stamped off for the first layer, Crumb Cake ink for the second layer, and used the detailed side of the stamp with Gray Granite ink to make two layers with the detailed mountains stamp.  I snailed the detailed mountains onto the card rather than using dimensionals, and it still gives you a 3D effect. I added a top layer of the small poppies from the Painted Poppies stamp set to really make the mountains seem like they are far away.

Try using different colors for the mountains, or even go with several layers of one color for a different effect. I hope you give reversible stamps a try, and I would love to see how you used this set!
